Plant glabrous or only sparingly silky, often making very large patches: lvs. pale, 2 in. or less long; lfts. 3-6 pairs, broad, deeply cut: fls. in globose stalked heads; fruiting calyx broader than long, the red spines attractive all summer and autumn.
