Zygopetalum maxillare, Lodd. Pseudobulbs 2 in. long: lvs. lanceolate, 1 ft. long: scape 9 in. long, 6-8-fld.: fls. 1 1/2 in. across; sepals and petals ovate-oblong, acute, green, with transverse brown blotches; labellum horizontal, purple, with a very large, glossy purple, notched horseshoe-shaped crest, middle lobe roundish, waved, and obscurely lobed. Winter. Brazil.—Distinguished by its small fls. and very large crest.

Climbing species. Up to 6 bright green flowers. 2.5 in (6 cm) wide flowers. varying amount of red-brown blotches on flowers. bright bluish purple labellum. Long, distinct rhizome between pseudobulbs and ascending habit. suitable for slab culture. treefern can be used as medium.
