Silene alpestris, Jacq. Perennial, 4-6 in. high, cespitose, more or less viscid above: sts. dichotomous: lvs. mostly radical, lanceolate-linear, rather obtuse: fls. white, rather large, shining, in corymbose panicles; calyx short, campanulate-clavate, not inflated, 10-nerved; petals obovate, 4-lobed at the apex, and with 2 teeth at the base of each petal. May-Aug. Mountains of E. Eu.—It forms a dense mass of underground sts. and is easily prop. by division or seeds. Var. grandiflora, Hort., is a large-fld. form offered in the trade. Var. Richentreichii, Hort., is offered in the trade as a smaller form, about 6 in. high. | |||
