Small tree, to 30 ft.: young branchlets glabrous, reddish: lvs. suborbicular, or ovate, acuminate, subcordate or truncate at the base, coarsely serrate and usually 3-lobed, dark green and shining above, glaucescent beneath, glabrous except axillary tufts, 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 in. long: fls. 6-12 in a cyme; the bract stalked; staminodes present; style glabrous: fr. ovoid, mucronulate, tomentose, thick-walled.
