Aplectrum (Greek, with no spur). Orchidaceae. A small orchid, with smallish dull-colored fls. in a raceme, on a leafless scape, which springs from a large corm-like tuber. Single species (or possibly two), in woods in the northern states. Flower spurless and sacless; petals and sepals similar, narrow; lip 3-lobed and crested, deflexed; fertile anther 1, the pollen-masses 4, smooth and waxy; column free, compressed, the anther borne below the top. Aplectrum hyemale is a species of orchids (family Orchidaceae) and the sole species of the genus Aplectrum. The generic name comes from Greek and signifies "spurless". The species is commonly referred to as Adam and Eve or putty root, the latter refers to the mucilaginous fluid which can be removed from the tubers when they are crushed.
