Philesia buxifolia, Lam. (P. magellanica, Gmel.). Much branched, 3-4 ft.: lvs. alternate, linear-oblong, 1-11/2 in. long, leathery, evergreen, feather-veined, glabrous, glaucous beneath; margins reflexed; petiole jointed at the junction of the blade: fls. solitary, bright rosy red; petals wavy; filaments united into a tube below the middle, then free: ovary 1-celled, with 3 short parietal placentae which bear several ovules: fr. a berry.
