Spiraea bumalda, Burvenich (S. japonica x S. albiflora. S. pumila, Zabel). Shrub, 2 ft. high, rarely higher: lvs. ovate-lanceolate, sharply and doubly serrate, glabrous, 2-3 in. long: fls. whitish to deep pink: follicles diverging. July, Aug. B.H. 17: 12. Gn. 46, p. 416. Mn. 2, p. 24. G. C. III. 43:416.—Cult. in many different forms, probably all of garden origin. Two of the best are var. Anthony Waterer, a very free-flowering, compact shrub with bright crimson fls. in rather dense corymbs and rather narrow, incisely serrate lvs. Gn. 45:49. G.C. III. 14:365; and var. Froebeli, Hort. (S. callosa var. Froebeli, Hort.), a taller plant with broader, ovate-oblong lvs. and also with bright crimson fls. F.E. 31:604. A similar form is S. Lemoinei, Zabel (S. Bumalda var. ruberrima, Hort.), hybrid of S. Bumalda and S. bullata, a low, compact shrub, with somewhat bullate lvs. and pink fls. CH
