Gaussia (probably from a personal name). Palmaceae. One slender pinnate-leaved palm, reaching about 20 ft., from Cuba, recently intro. in S. Calif. It is allied to Hyophorbe and Pseudophoenix. G. princeps, Wendl., is a spineless species, the st. thickened below but very slender above: lvs. pinnatisect, the pinnae crowded and narrow-linear and entire or 2-cut: fls. very small, on filiform branches, monoecious; spadix long-stalked: fr. small, purple or red.
