Prunus mollis, Walp. (P. emarginata var. mollis, Brew. Cerasus mollis, Douglas). Small tree, reaching 30-50 ft., straight and graceful, with reddish cherry-like bark: young growth soft pubescent: lvs. 1-3 in. long, obovate to oblong or oblanceolate, mostly acute, serrate, nearly or quite glabrous above, pubescent underneath, the stipules narrow and laciniate: fls. white, in 5-10- fld. clusters; calyx-lobes oblong, obtuse, and entire, becoming reflexed, much shorter than the tube; petals obovate, about 2 lines (1/6in.) long: fr. 1/3in. or less long, bright red, very bitter; stone wrinkled, keeled on one edge.
