Euscaphis japonica, Dipp. (E. staphyleoides, Sieb. & Zucc. Sambucus japonica, Thunb.). Shrub, to 10 ft.: lfts. 7-11, ovate-lanceolate, glabrous, serrate, 1½-3 in. long, each with 2 small stipules: fls. in broad many-fld. panicles to 6 in. long: fr. consisting of 1-3 pods, ½ in. long, apiculate, each with 1-3 steel-blue seeds.
