Much-branched low shrub, 1-3 ft.: branches, lvs. and pedicels densely rufously appressed - strigose: lvs. elliptic or elliptic - lanceolate, persistent, 1-3 in. long: fls. 1-3; sepals lanceolate, serrate - glandular; corolla pure white or rosy purple, 2-3 in. broad, fragrant; stamens usually10. May. China. B.R.811. B.M. 2901. L. B. C. 13:1253. G. 28:323. Gn. 33, p. 321. G.W. 15, p. 650.— Some remarkable varieties of this species are the following: Var. album, Rehd. (R. ledifolium var. leucanthum, DC. A. indica var. alba, Lindl. R. leucanthum, Bunge). Fls. white, sometimes striped pink. G.C. III. 33:373. Gn. 54, p. 487. G. 6:607. Var. Noordtianum, Rehd. Possibly a hybrid of this species and R. sub-lanceolatum.— R. ledifolium has produced, with A. indica, a large number of beautiful hybrids, of which one of the first was figured in 1833 as R. pulchrum.
