Malortiea (E. von Malortie, Germany). Palmaceae. A small group of diminutive palms of Cent. Amer., by some authorities referred to Reinhardtia as a subgenus, with 6-12 stamens. They are spineless plants, with alternate lvs. which are simple or 2-lobed at the end, margins entire or dentate or erose on the ends: fls. unisexual, in branched spadices or spikes that arise from the lower axils. They are warmhouse subjects, and useful where very small palms are desired, as in a Wardian case. M. gracilis, Wendl. Sts. slender, ringed, 18-24 in. or more high: lvs. slender-petioled, about 9 in. long and broad, split to the rachis at the top, and the 2 halves lobed, the lobes entire or notched,split near the rachis to form holes: spadix erect, branched, bearing scattered sessile male and female fls.; stamens 10-12. Guatemala. KM. 5291. M. simplex. Wendl. Slender cespitose little palm, with oval slender-petioled mostly simple lvs. which are acuminate -toothed and more or less shallow - notched at the apex: spadix fcw- branched, with sessile fls. Costa Rica. B. M. 5247.—M. Tuerckheimmi.Damm. Height about 16 in., the sts. thin and about 1 ½ lines thick and bearing a crown of about 15 geonoma-like dull green lvs.: If .-blade cuneiform, 6 in. long and 2 in. broad, not bifid, with 19 veins either side of midrib and the blade somewhat folded between them, the margin crenulate; petiole about 1 in. long.
