Michelia compressa, Sarg. (Magnolia compressa, Maxim.). Tree, to 40 ft., with smooth dark bark: lvs. oblong or narrow-obovate, narrowing into long petioles, obtuse or short-pointed, entire, coriaceous, lustrous above, 3-4 in. long: fls. fragrant, yellow, about 1 in. across; sepals and petals narrow-obovate; anthers nearly sessile; head of pistils stipitate: fr.-cone 2 in. long. Japan, a northern species.
