Terrestrial bromeliad. Densely packed rosettes with narrow triangular leaves 3/4 inch (2cm) long, having toothes at their bases. Green flowers 3cm (1.25 inch) long come in the summer. Keeps spreading in width indefinitely.

Cultivation

Outdoors: Grow under full sun in soil of moderate fertility and excellent drainage.

Indoors: Grow under bright light in a bromeliad soil mix. Give moderate amount of water much of the year, but keep the plant nearly dry during winter. If temperature drops below 41F (5C), the plant becomes prone to root rot from sitting water. Low-nitrogen fertilizer can be given monthly from mid spring to late fall.

Propagation

Seeds should be planted in spring and kept at 81F (27C). Rosettes can be divided and rooted in spring or summer.

Pests and diseases

Mealybugs can be problematic during flowering period.
