Crataegus prunifolia, Pers. Shrub or tree, to 30 ft.: branches spreading or somewhat ascending, spiny: Lvs. obovate, or roundish obovate, doubly serrate, glabrous or pubescent on the veins beneath when young, 2-3 in. long: corymbs pubescent; stamens 10; anthers pink: fr. red; stones with 2 furrows on the inner side, sometimes nearly plain. May, June.—Origin unknown; by some thought to be a hybrid between C. Crus-galli and C. macracantha or C. succilenta. B.R. 22:1868. G.W. 8:114. Var. variegated, Hort. Lvs. variegated with yellowish white. F.W. 1877:65. CH
