Leptochilus (from the Greek referring to the linear form of the fruiting frond). Polypodiaceae. A group of moderate-sized tropical ferns, allied to Dryopteris, but formerly classified under Acrostichum. The leaves are pinnately divided; the sporangia are borne very close together so that at maturity they appear entirely to cover the backs of the fertile leaves. CH
