Linaria vulgaris, Mill. (Antirrhinum Linaria, Linn.). Toad-flax. Butter-and-eggs. Vigorous perennial, spreading freely by underground sts. and in time forming large and persistent patches: sts. strict, nearly or quite simple, slightly glaucous, 1-3 ft. high: lvs. many, scattered, linear, somewhat narrowed below: fls. in a terminal spicate raceme, erect-spreading, with hanging nectary spur, sulfur-yellow, but orange on the bearded palate. Eu. A.G. 13:469. — Extensively naturalized, and commonly regarded as a bad weed; but it infests chiefly waste places, and although difficult to eradicate it does not spread very rapidly. Now and then it appears as an ornamental plant. It is more interesting to the general plant- lover than to the gardener. A double-fld. form is figured in G.C. III. 18:554. The peloria forms may have 5 spurs, or no spurs at all (R.H. 1851:433). The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
