Osmanthus aquifolium, Sieb. (Olea Aquifolium, Sicb. & Zucc. Olea ilicifolia, Hassk.). Shrub or small tree, to 20 ft.: Lvs. oval or ovate to elliptic-oblong, with 2-4 strong spiny teeth on each side, rarely entire, lustrous, 1-2 in. long: fls. fragrant, in axillary clusters, on slender pedicels about ⅓in. long; corolla divided nearly to the base, with reflexed lobes; sepals entire: fr. ovoid, ½-¾. long. June, July. G.C. II. 7:239 (as O. ilicifolius); III. 2:379. S.I.F. 1:82. Var. myrtifolius, Nichols. (O. myrtifolia, Hort.). Lvs. smaller, entire, acute or acuminate. Gn. 50, p. 86. Var. rotundifolius, Nichols. (O. rotundifolius Hort.). Lvs. about 1 in. long, often obovate, entire or with short obtusish teeth; a dwarf slow-growing form. Var. atropurpureus, Schneid. (O. Aquifolium var. ilicifolius purpureus, Nichols.). Foliage purplish black while young, later green with purple tinge. Var. argenteo-marginatus, Hort., with white, and var. aureo-marginatus, Hort., with yellow variegation. —O. Aquifolium has often been confused with O. Fortunei (seesuppl. list) and the true O.
