Panicum virgatum, Linn. Fig. 2746. An upright grass with stiff culms, 2-6 ft. high, and with stout scaly rootstocks: spikelets in loose, compound panicles, usually more or less purplish, sharp-pointed; first glume half as long as spikelete, 5-7-nerved, second glume and sterile lemma of about equal length, 5-7-nerved. Native throughout U. S. except in the extreme W. R.H. 1890,p. 525; 1896, p. 572. Gn. 14,p. 215; 29, p. 235; 37 p. 245. G. 10:103. Dept. Agric., Div. Agrost. Bull. 7:60. A hardy perennial used for ornamental purposes. CH
