Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Pentstemon azureus, Benth. Erect or ascending, 3 ft. or less, glaucous, sometimes minutely pubescent: lvs. narrow-ovate to narrow- lanceolate: infl. loose and open; fls. 1 1/2 in. or less long, blue to violet, sometimes reddish at the base, the limb about 1 in. across. Calif. B.M. 7504. J.F. 2:211.

Var. Jaffrayanus, Gray (P. Jaffrayanus, Hook.). Lower (about 1 ft. tall), young sts. tinged with red: lvs. oblong to oval or the upper ones ovate-lanceolate, glaucous: fls. large and showy, rich blue and reddish at base and in the throat. Calif. B.M. 5045. R.H. 1874:430. H. F.II. 1:5. G.C. III. 58:67.—By some kept specifically distinct. CH
