Philadelphus mexicanus, Schlecht. (P. guatemalensis, and P. sempervirens applied to this in Calif, are apparently garden names). Evergreen shrub, to about 6 1/2 ft.: lvs. ovate; 1 3/8 in. long, 2/3-1 1/2 in. wide, acute to short- acuminate, distantly blunt-toothed, glabrous or spar-ingly hairy above, scabrous beneath with short stiff, closely appressed hairs, in general pointing toward the apex: fls. occasionally in short leafy racemes (a transition to the first great subdivision of the genus, see A in key on p. 2579), 2 in. across, cream-colored, fragrant.
