Tree, to 40, or occasionally to 60 ft., with spreading and sometimes ascending branches: branchlets greenish or purplish, bloomy, glabrous: lvs. rigid, dark green, 8-13 in. long: cones broadly ovate, 4-6 in. long, chocolate-brown; apophysis low-pyramidal; umbo elongated and reflexed with short spiny tip; seeds 3/4 in. long, short-winged. S. Calif. S.S. 11:5.57, 558.—Rarely cult.; not hardy N. CH
