Rhododendron viscosum, Torr. (Azalea viscosa, Linn.). White Swamp Honeysuckle. From 4-8 ft.: winter buds glabrous: branchlete with stiff hairs: lvs. obovate-oblong, obtuse or mucronulate, ciliate, bristly hairy on the veins beneath, 2-4 in. long: fls. white or tinged rose, 1 1/2-2 in. long, viscid outside, fragrant; style red. June, July. E. N. Amer. Em. 2:438. Mn. 10:81. C.L.A. 11:496. Var. nitidum, Gray. From 1-3 ft.: lvs. oblanceolate, bright green on both sides: corolla tinged red. B.R. 414. Var. glaucum, Gray. Lvs. whitish-glaucous beneath, dull and glaucous above. L.B.C. 16:1518. Var. hispidum, Schneid. (Azalea hispida, Pursh). Pedicels bristly hispid: fls. usually pink: lvs. glaucescent beneath. L.B.C. 5:441.
